I recently have seemed to aquire a moniker not used too often in astrology. Yep, I am an Ayurvedic astrologer.
The most common question I get is, “What is Ayurvedic Astrology? ”
How is it different from Vedic Astrology and other kinds?
I was first introduced to the concept by Dr. Lad. He would put a chart up on the board of a person with an illness and then describe via the planets the samprapti, or Ayurvedic pathogenesis.
Later, in India, a couple of us carried around Palm Pilots, doing the charts of ordinary fieldworkers and the like, as they would come in for treatment. We could tell in a heartbeat the chance for children, the state of the liver, and so on.
Astrology is the radiology of Ayurveda, because the chart seems kind of like an MRI scan, not just of the body, though that is no small thing, but with a turn of the lens, a scan of the mind, and then the soul. Within all three together, it becomes Ayurvedic Astrology, where ayur comes from the Sanskrit word for life itself and vedic to be short comes from knowledge.
It was an amazing experience, to be sure. And I learned the power of uniting Ayurveda and the predictive powers of Vedic Astrology.
All of the dhatus or tissues are represented in the chart. The future and past of the illness (or not yet an illness) would be represented in the dashas. The prakriti, the vikruti, it’s all there.
The mind or psychology and mental issues of the individual are represented so well that I sometimes think of the astrologer as the psychologist/psychiatrist of Ayurveda.
Since India, I’ve had the opportunity to see many illnesses as represented astrologically. Dr. Lad’s principles have never let me down.
Studying with Hart at the Vedic Vidya Institute has only deepened my knowledge, especially of psychology, for which I am very thankful.
Then Sanjay Rath’s courses united everything with a deeper immersion into the classics of the subject.
Inconsistencies exist among the teachers’ methods but I’m amazed and honored that I now have some sense of what to do and how to do it when it comes to a chart and seeing illness, health, heartbreak, and joy.

Pardon me, but this is all very confusing–it seems like you are referring to some new kind of astrology that has to do with Ayurveda, called Vedic Astrology.
It seems like we have all gotten along very well with “normal astrology” for a long time. So why use Vedic Astrology? Is that some kind of New-Age thing??? I like to think of myself as kind of a traditionalist, so when I hear about some new thing, naturally I am a little doubtful!
Also, I see a lot of interesting new words. Is it possible for you to define some of those here, or is there a glossary I could peruse?
Thank you very much; this is all very interesting, but I feel a little lost!

Hey, Robin. Thanks for replying.
Ya, I will have links for all the strange words to definitions in the Sanskrit sections.
Actually, Vedic Astrology is very Old Age, in that it is over 5000 years old, and quite culturally conservative and so on.

Wow!!! So old!!!
I am quite humbled–pardon me for labeling it “New Age” as it would seem it predates western astrology by millenia!!!
Please post more of the basics for those who are unfamiliar with it, at your convenience. I feel I have blundered into something quite beyond my depth, and yet can’t leave it alone! You write so beautifully and the material is so fascinating–I hope you don’t mind the occasional “stupid question”!!!
Now, of course, I am wondering whether western astrology, and the Chinese variety, arose from Vedic Astrology, or arose independently…
Well! Someone “in the know” told me I am in a Mercury phase, or something like that, and that it’s a good time to learn new things…Thanks!!!

P.S. I have heard of the Vedas, and think it would be a good thing for me to read them–maybe I haven’t looked hard enough around this site–do you have any links to those???
Thanks again,
Robin

Hello Robin! My original response got deleted somehow, so forgive me.
I know of sites that have the Vedas in the original Sanskrit. Perhaps it’s best to leave them this way.
The Vedas are truly like a musical score, and then some.
It takes a gifted musician, philosopher, sage to bring them to life.
Look for that person first.
We have many wonderful teachers around today, so we are lucky!
